Our Story - Our Mission
The Northwestern High School Alumni Association mission is to help supplement academic and non-academic programs and support the school wherever possible. In an effort to foster these goals, the Alumni Association’s purpose is:

To promote a greater sense of cooperation and loyalty among alumni, students and Northwestern High School thereby continuing to build on the strong legacy left by the original founders of this organization.

To provide scholarship assistance to graduates of Northwestern High School.

To engage in social, recreational and other non-profit activities.

Jerry Williams
President
Jerry Williams is a dedicated alumnus, community leader, and servant-leader who proudly serves as President of the Northwestern High School Alumni Association of Detroit (NWHSAA). As a steadfast advocate for education, student success, and alumni engagement, Jerry is committed to preserving the rich history and traditions of Northwestern High School while helping to create opportunities for future generations of Colts. As President, Jerry works collaboratively with the NWHSAA Board of Directors to advance the Association's mission of scholarship, service, mentorship, and community engagement. He is a staunch supporter of the organization's mission and believes that every action, initiative, and investment should reflect and uphold the values upon which the Association was founded. His leadership is guided by a commitment to ensuring that the legacy of Northwestern High School is preserved and strengthened for generations to come. Jerry is quick to acknowledge that the Association's continued success is built upon the dedication of those who came before him. He extends sincere appreciation to Khary Frazier and Joseph Barber, whose leadership, commitment, and stewardship helped preserve and sustain the Northwestern High School Alumni Association for nearly two decades. Their efforts ensured that the Association remained a vital resource for alumni and students alike while protecting the proud traditions and legacy of Northwestern High School. Working alongside the Board of Directors, Jerry has helped lead initiatives that directly support students and strengthen the partnership between the Alumni Association and Northwestern High School. Among the Association's recent accomplishments are: • Sponsorship of Northwestern High School students attending HBCU College Tours. • Annual scholarship awards supporting graduating seniors pursuing higher education. • Development of alumni engagement programs connecting current students with successful Northwestern graduates. • Sponsorship of Willie Horton Day celebrations honoring Northwestern legends and inspiring students. • Installation of a Student Podcast Suite to promote communication, creativity, and media education opportunities. • Sponsorship and support of Northwestern High School athletic and student recognition programs. • Continued collaboration with school leadership to create pathways for student success and alumni involvement. Jerry believes that the strength of the Northwestern community lies in its ability to unite alumni, students, educators, and supporters around a common purpose. He credits the accomplishments of the Association to the collective efforts of the Board of Directors, volunteers, alumni members, and community partners who work tirelessly to support Northwestern High School. Najla Peoples
Vice President
Najla Peoples, Northwestern class of 1977, is a member of DECA, and current member of NWHAA for 5+ years, and attended Wayne County Community College. I am Board of Directors vice president. "I believe every student can excel."
Lakechia McCreary
Secretary
Lakechia serves as the Board of Directors Secretary and has over 17 years of administrative support experience. After graduating from the esteemed Northwestern High School in Detroit, Lakechia went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Applied Health from Bowling Green State University and a Master of Science in Administration, from Central Michigan University. Lakechia credits her success to the strong foundation developed at Northwestern and revels in being a part of the school’s rich history. She uses her years of expertise in maintaining optimal organizational processes, to the benefit of achieving the organizations mission of supporting the students and school as much as possible. She is dedicated to the continued success of Northwestern High School students and supports the connection of alum with current students. Outside of her career, Lakechia enjoys giving back in the local community and is dedicated to strengthening Northwestern High School’s alumni network, impact in the community, and dedication to the student body. Lakechia works toward helping Northwestern High School to continue it's greatness for years to come.
Tinesha Pollock
Tinesha Pollock serves as Treasurer for the Board of Directors of the Northwestern High School Alumni Association. In this role, she helps oversee the organization’s financial processes and supports the responsible stewardship of funds to ensure the Alumni Association can continue its mission of supporting students and strengthening the school community. A proud graduate of Northwestern High School, Class of 2005, Tinesha went on to pursue college studies while building a career rooted in service, operational excellence, and problem solving. She currently works as a Senior Testing and Validation Analyst and brings more than 18 years of experience as a pharmacy technician and customer service professional. Her professional background has developed her strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and commitment to accuracy—qualities she brings to her role as Treasurer. Tinesha credits Northwestern High School with providing a strong foundation that helped shape her personal and professional journey. She is proud to support initiatives that strengthen alumni engagement, connect alumni with current students, and help ensure that Northwestern’s legacy of excellence continues for future generations.

Chenise Gaines
Board of Directors
Chenise Gaines is a proud graduate of Northwestern High School's Class of 2003 and currently serves as a dedicated Board Member of the Board of Directors for the Northwestern High School Alumni Association of Detroit. Gaines earned a Bachelor of Science in Health Administration from Baker College and a Master of Science in Administration from Central Michigan University. Gaines is also an active member of the CMU Black Alumni Association. With a strong background in leadership, education, and service, Gaines remains committed to supporting alumni engagement, preserving Northwestern’s legacy, and advancing opportunities for future generations.
A 2005 graduate of Northwestern High School. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and minor in Criminal Justice from Point Loma Nazarene University; providing me with a deep understanding of systemic challenges and the tools to drive meaningful lasting change. Currently, I am a proud mother of one and serving as a 6th grade social studies teacher. I am actively pursuing my teacher certification while advancing toward a Master’s degree in Leadership—sharpening my ability to influence systemic change and drive impactful outcomes in our culture and community. Throughout my career, I have held numerous leadership roles and have been on the front lines of youth outreach, serving as a youth advocate, paraprofessional, and child welfare case manager within the foster care system. These experiences have shaped a deep commitment to protecting, mentoring, and uplifting at-risk youth. I've focused on ensuring every young person has access to support, guidance, and opportunities. As an educator, I am driven to advancing equity in education and building a legacy of leadership that extends far beyond the classroom. As a member of the Board of Directors for the Northwestern School Alumni Organization, I will serve with integrity and a deep sense of service. I am committed to being a powerful force for change. I will strive to strengthen alumni connections, foster community engagement, empower educational outcomes, and create initiatives to uplift future generations.

Conyea North
Living the Colt Spirit Through Leadership and Service. For Conyea North, being a Colt extends far beyond graduation—it is a lifelong commitment to leadership, service, and giving back. A proud member of Northwestern High School's Class of 2003, Conyea has dedicated his time and talents to strengthening his community while helping ensure that future generations of Northwestern students have opportunities to succeed. As the owner of Steadyflow Landscaping, Conyea has demonstrated the value of hard work, entrepreneurship, and integrity. His passion for developing others is equally evident through his service with the UAW Region 1 Men's Council, where he serves as Chair of the Men's Council Mentoring Committee. Through mentorship, he works to inspire young people and emerging leaders to pursue excellence, embrace accountability, and make meaningful contributions to their communities. Serving as Sergeant-at-Arms for the Northwestern High School Alumni Association of Detroit, Conyea is dedicated to preserving the proud traditions of Northwestern while supporting initiatives that directly benefit students, alumni, and the surrounding community. He believes that every act of service strengthens the Colt legacy and reflects the enduring values instilled by Northwestern High School. Conyea is proud to serve alongside a dedicated Board of Directors under the leadership of President Jerry Williams, whose vision for student advocacy, scholarship, and organizational excellence continues to inspire the Association's work. Together, they are committed to honoring the past while building a stronger future for every Colt who follows.
